Sharks in the Desert
by John Smith
Book Picture
One of Nevada's finest newspaper columnists and authors here has penned one of the best biography-history combination books ever with tis work which focuses on those folks who made big money in the casino business. How HAS Las Vegas changed since the early days? Who were the visionaries, the entrepreneurs, those who anticipated what it has become today? Also, what changed the perception of Las Vegas as an 'outlaw city,' to 'a community that prospered because it remained intriguing and was able to constantly reinvent itself'? From Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, the Flamingo and El Rancho to the earliest days of the Frontier and Stardust, Smith takes us on a historic trip, focusing on the people, their dreams, what went right, what went wrong and how it all led to the Las Vegas we know today.

New Orleans Winter Bayou Poker Championship Set to Begin

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

New Orleans, LA – The largest and most prestigious poker tournament series in the world is coming soon to Harrah’s New Orleans.  For the fourth consecutive year, Harrah’s New
Orleans will be hosting the south’s premier poker extravaganza, which is sure to attract players not just from the United States, but from all over the world.  The Harrah's New Orleans Winter Bayou Poker Championship will take place from Nov. 26 through Dec. 5, 2007.  This year’s schedule includes ten tournaments, as well as multiple satellites and around-the-clock cash-game action.

Just two weeks before the tournament is set to begin, hotel rooms are still available at a special discounted rate for all poker players.  In cooperation with Harrah’s New Orleans, the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel and Doubletree Hotel are both offering a special rate for poker players at just $79 per night.  Both hotels are located right across the street from the poker action.   To book a room, call the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel at 1-800-996-3426 and ask for the “Harrah’s World Series of Poker Rate” or call the Doubletree Hotel at 1-800-222-8733 and ask for “Rate Code: WSP.”

“This is our fourth straight year to be part of the World Series of Poker and every year this tournament continues to grow ,” said Jim Hoskins, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Harrah’s New Orleans.  “But aside from the great poker action, the best thing we have to offer is warm hospitality, terrific world-class cuisine and entertainment, and all the excitement that comes with visiting the great city of New Orleans.”

This year, a special guest will be playing at the Winter Bayou Poker Championship.  John Tabatabai, a British poker player based in London is scheduled to make the overseas trip to the Crescent City.  Tabatabai is perhaps best known for his runner-up finish in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, which took place in September.  He won over a million dollars for that finish.  Other top poker pros are also expected to play in New Orleans.  In past years, this tournament has attracted poker superstars including Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Dan Harrington, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Gavin Smith, Phil Gordon, and many others.
