Wisconsin Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Tribal Gambling

Tuesday, July 18, 2006
MADISON, Wisconsin -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Las Vegas-style gambling, from slot machines to craps, can continue on Indian reservations in Wisconsin under a state Supreme Court
  decision released Friday.

"The ruling said the state must honor its contracts with 11 tribes that operate 28 casinos.

"A Kenosha dog track had argued that the contracts were illegal because of a 1993 state constitutional amendment that bars all gambling except bingo, raffles, pari-mutuel on-track betting and the state-run lottery.

"The high court disagreed.

“'The state must honor its contractual obligations in their entirety,' said the ruling, which also affirmed the governor's right to renegotiate those contracts.. . ."
