MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the Boston Herald: "New Bedford is redoubling its drive to snag a proposed $1 billion-plus Mashpee Wampanoag casino amid signs the tribe's initial choice for a
gambling resort may not be a sure thing after all.
"With opposition mounting in Middleboro to plans for a casino resort, a top New Bedford city councilor yesterday called upon the Mashpee Wampanoags and their investors to reconsider the historic port city.
"Some Middleboro officials are reportedly seeking hundreds of millions up front to pay for new roadways and other infrastructure around the proposed, heavily wooded casino site in a rural section of town.
"But David Alves, chairman of New Bedford's gaming committee, argued his city can provide a ready-to-go building site with roadways, sewer lines and utilities - avoiding some of the controversial cost issues now surfacing in Middleboro..."
