two tribal-owned resorts are spending upward of a combined $1.5 billion to add more hotel rooms, slot machines, poker tables and entertainment attractions to their current offerings. The projects will put scores of construction workers and engineers to work over the next few years and create about 3,800 permanent resort jobs.

"Analysts say the $4 billion-plus gaming market here can easily accommodate the growth. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun bring in about $2.5 billion a year in revenues and are racing to capture an even bigger slice of Northeast gaming.

"On the Mashantucket Pequot reservation, the MGM Grand at Foxwoods is rising from the woods next to the tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino. A new hotel tower, casino and performing arts theater will carry the well-known MGM brand under an alliance finalized in December.

"On the other side of the Thames River, the Mohegan Tribe plans to spend $740 million to erect a second glass-encased hotel tower and add more gaming space, restaurants, shops and a 1,500-seat House of Blues performance hall.
